"Ông đồ" is a traditional term for educated individuals steeped in the old Confucian scholarship of Vietnam, typically scholars who had studied or attained lower-level degrees but had not been appointed to official government posts.
Their primary activities included teaching Han and Nôm characters (earning them the title *thầy đồ*, or "master of characters") and writing, or gifting, calligraphy and parallel sentences for the public. They were a particularly familiar sight during the Tet (Lunar New Year) season, setting up their ink and red paper on the sidewalk.
The figure of "ông đồ" is also inextricably linked to the famous poem of the same name by Vũ Đình Liên (composed in 1936); the poem serves as a symbol of nostalgia for the era of Confucian scholarship and traditional culture, which were gradually fading away amidst the changing times.
