"The Mouse Wedding" is one of the most renowned works of Dong Ho folk art, a tradition dating back approximately 500 years.
The artwork features twelve mice and a single cat. It depicts a scene where a procession of mice offers gifts to the cat in hopes of securing peace and safety. The large cat sits majestically in the right corner, extending a paw to accept the tribute. Leading the group is a mouse humbly presenting a bird, followed by another carrying a fish, while two others bring up the rear playing wind instruments. Another scene captures the lively mouse wedding procession: the dashing groom rides a pink horse, followed by the bride in her palanquin and an entourage carrying flags and ceremonial parasols amidst the spirited sounds of trumpets and drums.
The cat symbolizes the oppressive local gentry and arrogant officials, while the mice represent impoverished peasants who must offer bribes, such as birds and fish, to ensure they can go about their lives undisturbed. Despite living under oppression, the people of the past infused the artwork with good-natured humor and aspirations for a peaceful, joyful, and happy life. It also embodies the cycle of life and death, the concept of proliferation, and the wish for a large, thriving family.
