This Kind of Woman

The stories in this collection were chosen not only for their high literary quality, but for the ways they reflect the profound changes in women's lives in postwar Japan. Originally published between 1960 and 1976, they include stories about single mothers, women in conventional marriages who are questioning their roles as wives and mothers, and young women who are trying to understand their relationship to men, to other women their age, and to their mothers.

The authors - Enchi Fumiko, Kono Taeko, Kurahashi Yumiko, Oba Minako, Setouchi Harumi, Takahashi Takako, Tomioka Taeko, Tsumura Setsuko, Tshushima Yuko, Yamamoto Michiko - are all well known in the Japanese literary world. Most are introduced to the English-reading public for the first time in this volume.
