It is as incontestable that Ostrovsky is Russia's greatest playwright as that Pushkin is her greatest poet, although recognition came belatedly to Pushkin outside of his own country and has not yet come to Ostrovsky. With Dickensian humour his comedies reveal the life and character of 19th century Russian tradesmen, merchants, clerks and government officials. His tragedies expose the tyranncial forces in 19th century Russia that were obstructing the country's progress.
