Laos: late 1970s.  At a time of real problems that placed it among the ten poorest countries in the world.  Laos receives the added burden of thousands of refugees from Khmer Rouge-controlled Kampuchea.  These traumatised refugees come with stories of escape from almost unbelievable cruelty.  Laos sends a small delegation.  Dr Siri and his Politbureau friend, Civilai, to test the temperature in the southern neighbour accredited as a brother socialist country.  'If you go to Kampuchea, you will burn, Siri Paiboun.'  Siri is well warned, but being Siri, and having diplomatic immunity.  Siri goes anyway.  He quickly finds his immunity does not protect him from facing certain death in a Khmer Rouge torture centre.  Typically, under torture, Siti's mind solves the case of the epee murders in Vientiane, an investigation interrupted by his departure to Campuchea.
