Dead Souls

The novel-poem Dead Souls was written in the middle of the last century (1842-1852). It describes the adventures of a rogue by the name of Chichikov who travels round the country buying up "dead souls" from provincial landowners, peasant serfs who have died but whose names have not yet been removed from the tax registers. Chichikov's fraudulent transactions take the reader into the world of the truly "dead" souls of the landowners themselves, whom Gogol portrays with great realism and satire, holsing them up to "universal ridicule"
