A Voyage Round The World

Commodore Anson’s legendary circumnavigation has it all: storms and shipwrecks, mutiny, hunger and hardship, thirst and scurvy, piratical actions, pressing on against all odds, facing (and a lot of times meeting) death and destruction even with survival in plain sight. And to top it all off, only providence or sheer luck prevented the flagship Centurion, the last remaining ship of the squadron, from being taken while coasting up the Channel in dense fog, sailing undetected right through the middle of the whole French fleet. Hollywood couldn’t invent a better storyline.

This is a slightly abridged and modernized version of the official, authorized publication of 1748, ostensibly written under the direction of Lord Anson by Richard Walter, the Chaplain of the Centurion. There are some doubts in scholarly circles concerning at least the sole authorship of the good chaplain, but this is not the place to discuss this matter.
